Title III Grant - Patricia Dwyer: Reported that the Grant is IN on Monday, March 1. In case of being approved the grant money will flow from October 2. IV. Discussion Issues: Diversity - Criteria for determining diversity course listings. There was a discussion on how to bring more diversity into General studies and major courses. The suggestions were: * To indicate with a mark the courses in General Studies program which satisfy the diversity requirement by analogy with a requirement of computer literacy. * To keep the current set of GS courses (without adding the new ones) but to encourage the instructors to put attention to diversity. * To encourage instructors to incorporate a component of diversity. * Identify elective courses on diversity issues. * Issues on diversity should be linked to intended students' outcome for each course. * To bring an outside expert to review the GS program. The discussion continued around the questions "What is diversity?" and "How to assess the diversity?" Examples of how other institutions define "diversity" were reviewed and compared with a statement on diversity as reflected in Goal No 5. The prevailing consensus was that the use of the concepts "prejudice", "discrimination", "oppression", "negative practices", etc. may emphasize differences rather than "promote tolerance and the need for cooperation among diverse cultures" (goal 5, GSP at SC flyer). While a review of how other institutions define diversity might be advisable, the committee members agreed that the current formulation is satisfactory. In terms of assessment, for now, only Sociology Program is using a specifically designed set of assessment questions on the topic of diversity. The next meeting of the General Studies Committee will be at 3:10 on April 7th in White Hall. Minutes prepared by Elena Ermolaeva h:h{QCJOJQJ^JaJ(EF ! k } ~ ' ( A Q !
