Voting Members Not Present: c. lynne hannah (E&PS, 2006), Alan Tinkler (A&H, 2006), VJ Brown (Dean of B&SS) 1. Dr Stern - The VPAA commended the Committee for pursuing the campus-wide "conversation" on general education now scheduled for the 2004-05 academic year. 2. Introduction of new members - At the beginning of the meeting, none of the new members had arrived (Subsequently Dr. Daily joined the committee meeting) 3. Approval of the April 7, 2004 Minutes - The minutes were approved as distributed. 4. Proposed changes in the HIST 101,102 and 103 course names and catalog descriptions - Dr. Gordon of the History Department distributed copies of proposed changes in the names and descriptions of these courses that have been approved by the department and by the School of Arts and Humanities. The purpose of the changes is to direct attention to a broader perspective of world history. At the request of the Chair, the committee approved a motion made by Pat Dwyer, seconded by Laura Bischoff-Renninger to accept the proposed changes on this first reading. 5. General Studies Conversation/External Review - After some discussion, the committee agreed to the suggestion of Dr. Slocum-Schaffer that she draft and circulate for committee approval an outline of a procedure that could serve as a guideline for external review of the GS program. Ann Ferren was mentioned as a possible external reviewer. Dr Dwyer distributed copies of an AAC&U publication. "Taking Responsibilities for the Quality of the Baccalaureate Degree". The booklet has references to general education. The Chair also has some similar resources. 6. Assessment Report - Karen Green commented upon the results of the survey conducted last spring to solicit faculty input on the student course evaluation questionnaire and procedures. There may be grounds for making some changes in some of the questions and procedure for administering the evaluation, but no actions were taken at this time. Dr. Slocum-Schaffer reported that the Noel Levitz survey was administered to students and included the following item as a means for assessing diversity: GS courses have helped me to develop an understanding of various cultures and their interrelationships. Results of the survey will be distributed soon. Departments teaching "diversity" courses will be working together to come up with a plan for assessing achievement of intended outcomes. Assessment plans from 3 departments are still missing, but are in preparation. 7. Philosophy Course Update - Stephanie Slocum-Schaffer reported that a Philosophy-intensive section of ENGL 208 is currently being taught, is fully subscribed and apparently being well received. While a section of this course is not planned for the Spring semester, it is the intention to offer it again in the Fall of 2005. 8. GS Brochure - The Chair distributed copies of the GS brochure with correction to the MATH requirement. 9. Conferences - There are several conferences scheduled for the Spring of 2005 of interest to this committee's mission. Drs. Dwyer and Slocum-Schaffer invited committee participation. There being no other business, the committee adjourned at 9:00 AM. The next meeting of the committee will be on Tuesday, October 26th at 8:15 AM in White Hall 312.
