O s 0O E O FF22222O $x 0 "O  x x x FF$j E FFj General Studies Committee Minutes of the Tuesday, November 30, 2004 Meeting 8:15-9:00 AM, White Hall 312 Members Present: Larry Daily, Patricia Dwyer, Karen Green, Dan DiLella, John Landolt, Stephanie Slocum-Schaffer (chair), Alan Tinkler. Guest: Tom Segar, Director of Multicultural Student Affairs I. Minutes The committee approved the GSC Minutes of October 26, 2004. II. Assessment Regarding the Noel Levitz Survey, while the results were positive on the whole, Dr. Dwyer reported that there were two negatives: proud of campus and being at ϳԹis an enjoyable experience. Dr. Dwyer reported that Karen Green will use student focus groups to gain additional information, regarding student satisfaction. Gordon DeMeritt will then lead a team to develop strategies to deal with the issues raised during the focus group discussions. Regarding diversity, the students rated diversity in the bottom tenth in importance. Additionally, the gap between importance and satisfaction was not particularly large. Tom Segar suggested that the composition of the student body could explain the scores. Stephanie Slocum-Schaffer reported that assessment plans have been received from all but one department. III. Discussion of Ann Ferrens Lecture A digital copy of the Ann Ferren event, including the follow-up discussion is available at HYPERLINK "http://www.shepherd.edu/avmsweb/current.html"http://www.shepherd.edu/avmsweb/current.html. The document is titled General Studies Conversation. To continue the campus wide discussion initiated by the Ferren Lecture, the General Studies Committee has formed three faculty working groups, each led by a member of the General Studies Committee, to determine what changes need to be made to the General Studies Curriculum. Anyone who wishes to participate in one of the three faculty working groups, please contact the group leader. The group leaders will present their discussions to the General Studies Committee on January 27th and again on February 24th. Larry Daily s (ldaily@shepherd.edu) group will look at issues surrounding content versus skills. Karen Green s (kgreen@shepherd.edu) group will examine the profile of our student body. Alan Tinkler s (atinkler@shepherd.edu) group will look at how the General Studies Curriculum connects to the majors. IV. Meeting Day/Time The Committee voted to shift the meeting day, to Thursday, in order to accommodate teaching schedules. The meetings will still start at 8:15 AM and meet in White Hall 312.
