Approval of 1/27/05 Minutes, as amended: MVP. 2. Working Group Reports: The leaders of each of the GS working groups reported on the activities of their groups, as follows: Alan Tinkler reported that his group (integration of GS and the major) was gathering information about different approaches to general studies by looking at how other institutions structure their programs; he distributed information about some of the different models. The group's next meeting will tentatively take place on March 9th at 3:30. Karen Green reported that her group (who are our students and what do they need) had met twice and that their discussions were revolving around the question of which ϳԹstudents to focus on since the needs of students clearly depend upon which type/group of students one is talking about. Karen indicated that the working group has the sense that there should be a clear culture of what it means to be a Shepherd student - a citizen/scholar - in order to ensure a good fit between student and university. Dan DiLella suggested that the working group might profit from considering the goals and outcomes for students that are described in the existing GS brochure. Larry Daily reported this his group (content versus skills) had identified content as the primary focus of the current GS program. His working group appeared to have reached a consensus that more emphasis on skills in the program would be valuable, although considerable concerns were raised about the difficulty of assessing skills. His group will be gathering information and identifying models of more skills-based curriculums. 3. Assessment Reports: The Chair reported that the assessment plan for General Studies was finally complete, with all departments who contribute courses to the GS curriculum included in the plan. The new plan also focuses on some Intended Student Outcomes (ISO's) of the GS program that previously had not been assessed. Karen Green reported on the activities of the Assessment Task Force. The group is considering the possibility of discontinuing the use of the CAP test and is investigating different assessment tools that could replace it. 4. English 208: The Chair reported that one section of a Philosophy-intensive English 208 was offered in fall semester, 2004. The course was successful, with good enrollment and enthusiastic student evaluations. Either one or two sections of the course will be offered in fall semester, 2005. The Committee hopes that the next step in this process will be a full-fledged Philosophy 208 (starting with only one section) offered as an alternative to English 208 within the GS curriculum. 5. Program Review: The external review of the General Studies curriculum by Dr. Ann Ferren has been completed. The Chair distributed copies to all members for them to review. This will be the primary topic of discussion at the next meeting. 6. AAC&U Institute on General Education: Due to difficulties in securing funding, a ϳԹteam will not be to attend the Institute this year. It is hoped that funding will be secured for next year's Institute. Respectfully submitted, Stephanie A.
