Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2009-2010):  The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm Selection of committee secretary/note-taker Kristin Kaineg was selected to be the secretary/note-taker for the General Studies Committee Chair’s Report, Dr. Larry Daily and Dr. Scott Beard: Dr. Daily and Dr. Beard presented the AAC&U institute Liberal Arts standards and requirements. (see .PPT files on SAKAI for specific information) LEAP – Liberal Education and America’s Promise. There are four essential learning outcomes: Knowledge of Human Cultures and the Physical and Natural World Intellectual and Practical skills Personal and Social Responsibility Integrative Learning Review timeline for committees schedule, but by the end of 09/10 Academic year this committee needs to present reform recommendations for the Governance Committee. By Jan. 2011, this needs to be finalized and complete for the new Catalog. Some of the changes that will be taking place on campus: Reduced number of hours to graduate to 120hrs. Some majors may have more depending on program and licensure. Department Chairs are being asked to cut back their majors to 42–50 hours. The work completed in the committee needs to match our current Mission Statement at Shepherd. Decrease dependence on Adjuncts Increase the number of students who graduate in 4-years. This will also increase overall retention at Shepherd. We need to “Brand” the new core curriculum. Utilize the new structure to improve recruitment, increase retention, and align ŗŚĮϳԹĻĶųbetter with our COPLAC peers. Create an effort to communicate and bring awareness to the value of general studies. Members should talk openly with their departments. We need to know what students think of our current GS program. We need to ask if they understand the value of these GS courses and the role of GS across the campus. We need to adopt a core curriculum that provides a first-year and capstone experience. Goals and Purpose created for the new core curriculum need to permeate the campus atmosphere—more integration of Core Curriculum with major requirements. Associate Dean for Advising, Dr. Robert Warburton: Dr. Warburton provided an overview of what happened this summer during First-Year Advisement and the Transfer Sessions. As the process stands right now were are “just completing a checklist.” The General Studies is a broken system, because there is no understanding of WHY the students need to take these classes. We are just putting them in those courses. To the students, it becomes something to take. In science classes, students are in the lecture, but there is not room for them in the lab. So they will have to take the lab in the spring. English is already interviewing teachers for the spring semester so they have enough Adjunct faculty to teach ENGL 102/103/104. Dr. Warburton purposes that we create a Core Curriculum that have more choices and provides classes with more focus. Comments on Dr. Warburton’s Report: Dr. Henriksson, Bottom line, there is not enough staff. Dr. Jones, we need more choices at different levels in the curriculum. This will help us spread out the number of students in other courses. The Core Curriculum needs to be more major specific. The Average number of GS hours within COPLAC schools is 46.1. It is going to be tough to push down the number hours required by the Core Curriculum. General Studies Change Form: This form did not get final approval from the last academic year. Approval of the General Studies Change form will be deferred until the next meeting (9/16) once all the committee members get a chance to review it. Timeline and Division of workload The GS committee only has seven (7) meetings during this academic year and Dr. Daily recommended for the committee to break into sub-committees in order to get the work done more efficiently. How do we break down in sub-committees? It was discussed to use the Essential Learning Outcomes (as outlined by LEAP). Dr. Daily reviewed the task of this committee as stated in the Strategic Plan. The committee is charged with completing #5, a-k listed in Pathway #1: Inspire Student Learning and Development in the Strategic Plan (refer to pages 16–17 for complete list). We need to review all programs and find where first-year experiences and capstone classes exist and make this a requirement for all majors at Shepherd. Members to post ideas/suggestions to SAKAI as to how the GS committee will break into sub committees. Perhaps we can have a discussion via SAKAI before our next meeting. Members need to communicate with their department about the changes to the General Studies. Everyone should have a voice and this process should be as transparent as possible. Meeting day and Time It was mentioned that maybe the day and time of the meeting could be changed. No other time was purposed and the Current meeting schedule and time will remain the same. Every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm as stated in the constitution. Other Business No other business was discussed. Meeting adjourned at 5:30 pm Respectfully submitted, Kristin Kaineg, Secretary M–Ŗ®_ e L j Ć ī L O † ¦ŁŚno|}ńņMNŪØÅʝžĄīł*IŽųóīēćóćēćēŪīēÓɽī³ī³ī³ī³ī³ī³½©¢™©“‰“‰“‰ųćhŹ^"hqN¾5aJ hqN¾aJhŒAhqN¾aJ hqN¾\aJhŒAhqN¾5aJhŒAhqN¾\aJhŒAhqN¾5\aJhŒAhqN¾5\hŹ^"hqN¾\hŒAhqN¾\hqN¾ hqN¾5\ hqN¾\ hqN¾5hqN¾CJaJ)LM–®ÆŠš-Ng…£Āę &Ge”Ąģ ( H ÷÷īéąąąąąąąąąąąąąąąąąąąąąą 7$8$H$gdqN¾gdqN¾ ĘģgdqN¾$a$gdqN¾ŽžH u Ę ī = ^ _ ‡ ˆ L M Ā Ć ļ L N O † t ³ ööööööööńńńģģģäŪģģäĻĻĆ & F Ę„gdqN¾ & F Ę„gdqN¾„„^„„gdqN¾ & FgdqN¾gdqN¾gdqN¾ 7$8$H$gdqN¾³ Õ ų ż7¤šOoą„ ² ¤¦Śo}ņNÜóóóēēóóēóóóóóóóóß××××ĻĻĻ & FgdqN¾ & FgdqN¾ & FgdqN¾ & F Ę„gdqN¾ & F Ę„gdqN¾ØĘžĄłų‘=īł*IJMNOnŽ÷ļēļēēēēēēļēļēļāāŻŌĖĖŻ„Š^„ŠgdqN¾„ ^„ gdqN¾gdqN¾gdqN¾ & FgdqN¾ & FgdqN¾ & FgdqN¾ 1h°Š/ °ą=!°"°# $ %°„H@ń’H ‰FNormalCJKH\_HaJmH sH tH B@B ‰F Heading 1$$@&a$5KHDA@ņ’”D Default Paragraph FontRió’³R Table Normalö4Ö l4Öaö (kō’Į(No List@2@ņ@ ‰FList 2„Š„˜ž^„Š`„˜žKH\<B@< ‰F Body Text$a$KH\LZ@L ‰F Plain TextCJKHOJQJ\^JaJjžO"j ‰FList Paragraph„Šd¤Č^„Šm$CJKHOJPJQJ\aJB'@¢1B ‰FComment ReferenceCJaJTBT ‰F Comment Text¤ČCJKHOJPJQJ\aJJžO¢QJ ‰F Char Char1OJPJQJ_HmH sH tH 6U@¢a6 ‰F Hyperlink >*B*ph’H™rH ‰F Balloon TextCJOJQJ^JaJŽ0’’’’!’’ z™!’’ z™ ’’ z™ ’’ z™N„ ŽöLM–®ÆŠš-Ng…£Āę &Ge”Ąģ (HuĘī=^_‡ˆLMĀĆļLNO†t³Õų ż7 ¤ š O o ą „ ² ¤ ¦ Ś o}ņNÜØĘžĄłų‘=īł*IJMNOn˜0€€ø`±€˜0€€ø`±€˜0€€ø`±€0€€ø`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–p–`ʘ0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–p–`ʘ0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–p–`ʘ0€–ø–`±€˜0€–p–`ʘ0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€š0€–p–`ʀ˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜ 0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜0€–ø–`±€˜ 0€–ø–`±€˜ 0Č–ø–`±€˜ 0Č–ø–°»€˜ 0‘–ø– §€˜ 0‘–ø– ɀ˜ 0‘–ø– ɀ˜ 0‘–ø– ¦€˜ 0Č–ø–`±€˜ 0Č–ø–`±€˜ 0v –ø–`±€˜ 0v –ø–`±€˜ 0Č–ø–`±€˜ 0i –ø–`±€˜ 0i –ø–`±€˜ 0i –ø–`±€˜ 0i –ø–`±€˜ 0i –ø½˜ 0i –øp¼˜ 0i –ø–°Ā˜ 0ć –ø–p¶˜ 0€–ø–@…€˜ 0™ –ø–@…€˜ 0™ –ø–@…€˜ 0™ –ø–@…€˜ 0™ –ø–@…€˜ 0å–ø–@…€˜ 0å–ø–@…€˜ 0å–ø–@…€˜ 0å–ø–@…€˜ 0€–ø–@…€˜ 0›–ø–@…€˜ 0€–ø–@…€˜ 0‘–ø–@…€˜ 0‘–ø–@…€˜ 0‘–ø–@…€˜ 0‘–ø–@…€˜ 0‘–ø–@…€˜ 0‘–ø–@…€˜ 0€–ø–@…€˜ 0į–ø–@…€˜ 0€–ø–@…€˜ 0ģ–ø–@…€˜ 0€–ø–@…€˜0€€ø– ¦˜0€€ø– ¦˜0€€p–`ʘ0€€p–`ʘ0€€p–`ʘ0€€p–`ʘ0€€p–`ĘLM–®ÆŠš-Ng…£Āę &Ge”Ąģ (HuĘī=^_‡ˆLMĀĆļLNO†¦ Ś o}ņNÜØžīłIJMNOnš0€€ø@Źš0€€ø@Źš0€€ø@Ź 0€€ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø@Źš0€–ø–@Ź€š0€–ø@Źš 0€–ø–@Ź€š0€–ø–@Ź€š0€–ø–@Ź€š0€–ø@Źš 0€–ø–@Ź€š 06–ø–`Հš 0€–ø`Õš 0–ø`Õš 0–ø`Õš 0–ø–`Հš 0–ø–`Հš 0] –ø–`Հš 0] –ø–`Հš 0] –ø–`Հš 0€–ø–`Հš 0€–ø`Õš 0€–ø`Õš 0€–ø`Õ  <°I<8o’æ€  <°I<8o’æ€  <°I<8o’æ€  <°I<8o’æ€  <°I<8o’æ€  <°I<8o’æ€  <°I<8o’æŃŽH ³ ŽŽš8š @ń’’’€€€÷š’š š0š( š ššB šS šæĖ’ ?šŽõū39RZ‹‘ÉÓźō.4GO‡ ¦ōż’$+DL÷ż${Åęé: I b%|[’’’’’’’’’Ū@ 2b%|[’’’’’’’’’W;4Ģz[’’’’’’’’’÷/:<üž’’’’’’’’’ÕVÆ]fÜÄĆ’’’’’’’’’ „Š„0żĘŠ^„Š`„0ż5‡hˆH. „8„˜žĘ8^„8`„˜ž‡hˆH. „p„˜žĘp^„p`„˜ž‡hˆH. „@ „˜žĘ@ ^„@ `„˜ž‡hˆH. „„˜žĘ^„`„˜ž‡hˆH. „ą„˜žĘą^„ą`„˜ž‡hˆH. „°„˜žĘ°^„°`„˜ž‡hˆH. „€„˜žĘ€^„€`„˜ž‡hˆH. „P„˜žĘP^„P`„˜ž‡hˆH. „„„0żĘ„^„„`„0ż5‡hˆH. „8„˜žĘ8^„8`„˜ž‡hˆH. „p„˜žĘp^„p`„˜ž‡hˆH. „@ „˜žĘ@ ^„@ `„˜ž‡hˆH. „„˜žĘ^„`„˜ž‡hˆH. „ą„˜žĘą^„ą`„˜ž‡hˆH. „°„˜žĘ°^„°`„˜ž‡hˆH. „€„˜žĘ€^„€`„˜ž‡hˆH. „P„˜žĘP^„P`„˜ž‡hˆH.!„T„0żĘT^„T`„0żCJOJQJ^JaJo(‡hˆH. „T„˜žĘT^„T`„˜ž‡hˆH. „$ „˜žĘ$ ^„$ `„˜ž‡hˆH. „ō „˜žĘō ^„ō `„˜ž‡hˆH. „Ä„˜žĘÄ^„Ä`„˜ž‡hˆH. „”„˜žĘ”^„”`„˜ž‡hˆH. „d„˜žĘd^„d`„˜ž‡hˆH. „4„˜žĘ4^„4`„˜ž‡hˆH. „„˜žĘ^„`„˜ž‡hˆH. „Š„˜žĘŠ^„Š`„˜žOJQJo()€ „ „˜žĘ ^„ `„˜ž‡hˆH.‚ „p„L’Ęp^„p`„L’‡hˆH.€ „@ „˜žĘ@ ^„@ `„˜ž‡hˆH.€ „„˜žĘ^„`„˜ž‡hˆH.‚ „ą„L’Ęą^„ą`„L’‡hˆH.€ „°„˜žĘ°^„°`„˜ž‡hˆH.€ „€„˜žĘ€^„€`„˜ž‡hˆH.‚ „P„L’ĘP^„P`„L’‡hˆH.„Š„˜ž^„Š`„˜ž.€„ „˜ž^„ `„˜ž.‚„p„L’^„p`„L’.€„@ „˜ž^„@ `„˜ž.€„„˜ž^„`„˜ž.‚„ą„L’^„ą`„L’.€„°„˜ž^„°`„˜ž.€„€„˜ž^„€`„˜ž.‚„P„L’^„P`„L’.Ū@ 2w`k?
