Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2009-2010): The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm Approval of minutes for meeting from 10/21/2009 Minutes approved and re-submitted, made corrections to attendance Charge from Faculty Senate: General Studies Change Form The Senate is concerned that the Key Lime Green form was not approved and believes the GCS needs a way to facilitate changes to GS if the problem arises. GCS recommends an endorsement of the Golden Rod form as the GS form. This means changes can be made to current GS classes but not to the program. The Golden Rod Form has a check box if it effects GS. A motion was made to use the Golden Rod Form as the vehicle to address any proposed changes to General Studies with the notion that the GS committee will not be reviewing any program changes to General Studies. The GSC believes we should not be entertaining any changes or proposals to change General Studies while we are undergoing the revisions Motion was approved, none opposed Goals and ISOs continue discussion from 10/21 minutes. Motion to approve ISO 4.1 as is. Demonstrate synthesis and advanced accomplishment across general and specialized studies through a capstone experience in the chosen discipline Motion approved / 1 opposed. Motion carries Final Statement on Goal and ISO sheet: These Intended Student Outcomes will be achieved through many pathways and many choices within each requirement, integrated where possible within the major and assessed in accordance with LEAP goals. Dr. Jones recommended to amend the statement to read: These Intended Student Outcomes will be achieved through many pathways and many choices within each requirement, integrated where possible within the major and assessed in accordance with LEAP goals, inside and outside the classroom beginning with a first year experience and ending in a capstone. Dr. Slocum-Shaffer recommends moving the statement so it does not appear as if it is part of our assessment. Dr. Slocum-Shaffers amends the statement to read: These Intended Student Outcomes will be achieved through many pathways and many choices within each requirement, inside and outside the classroom beginning with a first year experience and concluding with a capstone, integrated where possible within the major and assessed in accordance with LEAP goals. Motion to approve final statement as Dr. Slocum-Shaffer stated. Motion was approved. Motion approved. Now that each item on the program goals and ISOs has been reviewed and revised. A motion was made to pass the Program Goals and Intended Student Outcomes as a package. Motion to approve Goals and ISOs was approved. One (1) opposed. Dr. Schultz is on the record as being the one voting member to oppose the new Core Curriculum Program Goals and Intended Student Outcomes. Division of Workload A discussion on how to break into subcommittees occurred. Two sub-committee suggestions would be: Framework Committee and Assessment Committee The framework committee would take what is currently working well at ϳԹ(from the General Studies Program) and develop a new model to build a new Core Curriculum. The goal of the Core Curriculum is to work with disciplines not departments. The Framework committee would not choose specific courses, but merely implement a model for the Core Curriculum to rest. Dr. Synder is concerned that if we work in sub committees we will loose the ability to make Cross disciplinary connections between the Core Curriculum requirements. Dr. Hannah suggests that each member take back the approved ISOs to the depatment for courses or ideas that could fit within the Program Goals and ISOs. The Committee agreed to take the approved Program Goals and Intended Student Outcomes back to departments for discussion. Members should post ideas and comments to SAKAI before our next meeting (if the department was able to discuss it by Nov. 18, if not as department get a chance to discuss these Goals and ISOs). Other business Discussion of a December 2 meeting. Meeting adjourned at 5:40 pm Respectfully submitted, Kristin Kaineg, Secretary Email Discussion Discussion of a GSC retreat over the winter break. The GSC will continue to discuss the possibility of meeting on the dates and time listed above through email. Since the meeting, the GSC has agreed to meet Dec. 2 at 4:10. And the GSC are looking to meet during Jan. 47 or over Martin Luther King Jr. Day. More discussion to occur over email and on SAKAI.
