Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2009-2010): The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm Approval of minutes for meeting from 12/02/2009 Minutes approved. No corrections noted. MATH 108 Proposal Proposal from the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Engineering to increase the number of credit hours earned in MATH 108 from 3 credit hours to 4 credit hours. They want to add a trigonometry component to MATH 108. This course is a pre-requisite for Calculus, which requires understanding and background in Trigonometry. As the course is offered now, it does not adequately prepare students for Calculus. MATH 108 fulfills the Math General Studies Requirement and required approval from the GSC in order for the change to take place in the C&I committee. Motion to approve the change by Kristin Kaineg Second by John Schultz Motion passes. Credit hours for MATH 108 will change from 3 to 4 credit hours. Elect new Representative to the Academic Reform Committee Kristin Kaineg was originally elected to the Academic Reform Committee, but due to meeting time, she is unable to attend because of class. We need a representative from this committee who will be able to meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 3:30pm. Motion to elect Ed Synder for the Academic Reform Committee by Kristin Kaineg Second by Laura Clayton Motion approved. Ed Synder will be the new General Studies Representative for the Academic reform Committee. Outcome of Retreat Dr. Daily thanked the committee for a productive retreat. Now we need to determine where we go from here. We need to define what makes an academic course writing intensive, and the criteria for each area. Dr. Shurbutt commented on the current Framework and wants the committee to consider adding a requirement that all students have a Literature course before they leave Shepherd. This requirement would fall into the First Tier. Literature allows students to see how all the elements fit together; it brings in a historical component, societal component and a writing component. Writing component needs to be strengthened and adding Literature would be beneficial for all students. Dr. Hannah added that the Literature required a pre-requisite which is why we put it in the second-tier Dr. Schultz wanted to know where we stand on the Framework and in order for us to discuss the framework we need a motion to adopt the framework. He also supported Dr. Shurbutts proposal to add Literature, because we cannot be a premier liberal arts university if we dont require Literature. A discussion about adopting or changing the Framework took place. Concerns about adding to the framework developed at the retreat, about foreign language, keeping the number of hours in the General Studies to 42. A discussion came up in how ϳԹcounts and requires (Foreign) Language in the General Studies. It is very difficult for many majors to complete their coursework along with the additional 12 hours of Language proficiency. Foreign Language is addressed in the catalog with the General Studies, but it is not folded into the number of hours for the General Studies. It specifically states that this is BA requirement. This can be seen on pages 43-45 of the current catalog. A motion was made to postpone the Framework discussion till the next meeting Motion second Motion passed to postpone discussion on framework Information Literacy, presented by Ann Henriksson Information Literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. As stated in the LEAP principles, this is one out the Intellectual and Practical Skills ϳԹUniversity should provide to our students. It is the basis for life-long learning and common to all disciplines. By requiring information literacy students are more self-directed and have more control over their own learning. Information Literacy should be included in all tiers of the proposed framework. This is a requirement that could be added to the Capstone, in the major writing intensive course or it could be part of several courses. Either way, it is something we need to think about and consider as we further develop the framework and the course selections for the Core Curriculum. Information Literacy is already a component in the PHIL 100 course currently being taught at Shepherd. Additional information has been posted to SAKAI. It is recommended that members of this committee review the information. First Year Experience, presented by Judi McIntyre The topic of what the FYEX will be was brought up at the Retreat. The committee wanted more information and insight as to what other schools did and how it was counted within the Core Curriculum. Several examples and reports are posted to SAKAI. Members should take a moment to review the information. FYEX will impact the Core Curriculum in some way. If we offer an FYEX we would need 45 sections to service approximately 900 incoming students. FYEX are defined as courses that are intentionally designed to facilitate new students transition to and success in college by promoting: academic skills, active involvement/engagement, and social integration. The course PHIL 100 currently addresses these areas. For complete results, download and review the Summary of Results from 2006 National Survey on First-Year Seminars. Here is some data discussed in Judis presentation: 968 surveys were completed out of which 821 institutions responded they offer a FYEX seminar (84.8%) Of the 821 institutions, 57.9% indicate they offer extended orientation seminars The three most important course objectives: develop academic skills, provide an orientation to campus resources and services, and self-exploration/personal development. 92.2% of the responding institutions offer FYEX for academic Credit. Most of those institutions offer only 1 credit for this class. 50.4% of those institutions allow the seminar to apply towards general education requirements and only 9.3% allow the seminar to apply towards major requirements. More data and information can be found on SAKAI. Other Business Does the committee want to meet twice a month? If approved, the committee will meet on the first and third Wednesdays at 4:10pm and our next meeting will be February 2, 2010. Motion made to meet twice a month Motion second Motion passed. The GSC will meet on the first and Third Wednesdays at 4:10pm. No other business was discussed. A motion to adjourned was made and passed. Meeting adjourned at 5:18 pm Respectfully submitted, Kristin Kaineg, Secretary J^b= [ !
