Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2009-2010): The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm Approval of minutes for meeting from 2/3/2010 Minutes approved. No corrections noted. Math Concerns: Chris Elmer Chris Elmer presents to the committee. He proposes to develop Special Topic Math courses for each major or area. This MATH course would be a collaboration of Math and the host department. This course would not be solely taught by the math department (part-time taught), but would also require input and time by the host major. Students would learn math through example and hands-on experiences. A discussion took place about Chris Elmers presentation. Kevin Williams is concerned about how the part-time teaching would work with scheduling. Lynne Hannah suggests building off of the English model (Math for the social sciences, etc) Carol Plautz agrees with this idea and believes this would benefit students in Biology would who be able to work with actual examples. Service Learning: Holly Frye Holly Frye provides information about Service Learning at ϳԹUniversity. The office of Student Community Services and Service Learning work with the goals of the class and help match the course with a need in the community. Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Some courses require students to meet a set number of service learning hours, other courses attach it to an experience. The experience can be in addition to class time, in lieu of class equivalent class time. Either way, it should be mandatory in the class and not set up as extra credit. Education requires service learning and this program helps students realize and utilize different approaches and methodologies to teaching. The actual experience better prepares our student-teachers for what they will encounter once they get in the classroom. Contact Holly in the Service Learning office to learn more about how to organize and work a course into the experience. In order to qualify for service learning, it must meet all six points: Tied to learning outcomes in the course The beneficiary of the students work must be a non-profit entity All involved parties must benefit from the service A structured reflection component must take place Student is not financially compensated for the service Must address a social, cultural, or economic issue. Subcommittees Discussion about proposed subcommittees: It is recommended that the GS committee review the value rubric under the AAC&U website. Perhaps we adopt this rubric so we dont have to start from scratch. We need to set up precise objectives for each subcommittee Dr. Jones motions to accept the subcommittee breakdown with three subcommittees (#1 Writing, Societal, Science; #2 Quantitative, History, Cultural, capstone; #3 communications, artistic, well-being) Each subcommittee would also have to address the competencies. Second, by Anders Henricksson Open for discussion: Karen Green suggested creating a subcommittee just to deal with competencies. Expertise needs to be present in each subcommittee and in each area. Concern was expressed that Dr. Jones proposal may not have enough focus or concentration to develop good guidelines. Concern with the both proposed breakdown of how the sub-committees will be formed. How many on each committee? Who, what and where? And what the task is for each subcommittee? Dr. Jones Withdrawals his motion to accept the subcommittee breakdown. Modifications need to be made to both subcommittee break-downs. We can discuss over email, but we cannot vote over email. Discussion about how to best break-down into subcommittee needs to continue before the next meeting. See email for ideas and discussion. Framework proposal: further feedback and discussion Discussion postponed till next meeting. Other Business No other business was discussed. Meeting adjourned at 5:05 pm Respectfully submitted, Kristin Kaineg, Secretary K_cE c 0 PQ456S::;Iiʾʲʦʦʦʦʦxlah]hzOJQJh]hz5OJQJh_hz5OJQJh? _hzOJQJh?^}~gdz^gdz ^`gdz & Fgdzd^gdzm$ & Fdgdzm$>?}~hzhzCJaJ hzaJh*B*phHrH F Balloon TextCJOJQJ^JaJ~.!z!z zp~Kcd4Ss3SrCq)O}~EF0Q5 6 S : ; @ 'i:;IrLRpB>?^}0p`0`0KJ`0KJ`0KJ`0KpK`0KJ`0KpK`0KpK`0KJ`0KpK`0KpK`0KJ`0KJ`0KJ`0KJ`0KJ`0KJ`0KpK`0KpK`0KJ`0KpK`0KJ`0KJ`0KK0KpK`0KJ`0KJ`0KpJ`0KJ`0KpK`0KpK`0KJ`0KJ`0KJ`0KJ`0KpK`0KJ`0KJ`0KJ` 0KpK`ƀ0KJ` 0KK`ƀ 0KKР 0KKP 0+KKp 0+K 0+KP0KK 0KpK`ƀ 06 KpK`0KpK` 06 KpK` 06 K 06 KK 0@ KK 0@ KK 0@ KK 0@ KK 0@ K 0@ KKм0KK 0KKР 0KK`ƀ 0KpK`ƀ 0Kp` 0KK 0LKK 0KK 0pK 0pK 0pK 0pKK`ƀ 0KpK` 0KP0KK 0KK`ƀ 0KKР0KK 0K 0K0K 0KKЉ0000Kcd4Ss3SrCq)O}~EF0Q6 S ; ;Ir>?^}0@ʀ0@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJP0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ 0KJ@ʀ0KJ@ʀ 0KJ@ʀ 0KJ@ʀ 0KJ@ʀ 0KJ@ʀ 0KJ@ʀ 0KJ@ʀ 0KJ@ʀ 05 KK@ʀ 0JJ@ʀ 0JJ@ʀ 0JJ@ʀ 0JJP 0JJP 0JJP 0JJ@ʀ 0JJ@ʀ0JJ@ʀ 0JJ@ʀ 0x$JJ@ʀ0JJ@ʀ 0JJ@ʀ<I<8o<I<8o<I<8o <I<8o~q r~~~8 @ 0( B S ?~:@z9?!(/6]edokq(O V !+::::: I b%|[j+ 6n|ld g@ 2iW;4z[/:<`._A6<2FUqKfcMX_NjWrJV]foe_=F@eZ%VWjZ'f6kdI vl)8 0^`05hH. 88^8`hH. pp^p`hH. @ @ ^@ `hH. ^`hH. ^`hH. ^`hH. ^`hH.
