Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2009-2010): The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm Approval of minutes for meeting from 3/3/2010 Minutes approved. Correction to date was noted and fixed. Internationalization: Mark Stern Dr. Mark Stern was not present at the meeting. Moved to Agenda item number 3. Questions from chairs: Is there a level for the Writing Intensive Course? (Does it need to be a 300/400 level course or can it be lower?) Can the writing intensive and the capstone courses be one and the same course? Response from committee: Writing Intensive courses should be up to the department and does not have to limited to one course. One course is required based on the framework. The ISO created for writing intensive does not get into the details of number of words written or amount of pages. As it currently stands in the Framework, the Writing Intensive course is separate from the Capstone, but that may not have to be the case. The committee believes it is important for the Writing Intensive course to be run by the major, because they know best what is needed for their students, versus a general upper level writing course that may not address specific major issues. However, the specifics of the Writing Intensive course will have to be addressed later once we have a more solid idea of an approved framework and tier structure. First Year Expereince survey results: Laura Renninger An online survey was distributed to the campus community asking what type of FYEX experience Students and Faculty would prefer. Based on the survey results the Blended Model was preferred. It was discussed that this blended model would fit into the whole semester with the first 8 weeks being taught by faculty and the last 8 weeks by the university. If a specific major didnt have FYEX, ϳԹwould offer a general FYEX. This would also be open to undecided majors. Another possibility would be to group like majors. A pilot of FYEX will occur in the fall. The Nursing Program has offered to participate. This pilot would include three groups of students each experiencing a different type of FYEX to see what may be the most successful. Details of this are still being worked out. Questions from the Committee: Are we locked into 1 hour? Perhaps this could be a minimum of one credit, but some majors could make it three credits. Dr. Renninger is confident we can find a way to make this course successful with only one credit as many other institutions have a similar model in place. See Survey Info sheet for exact results. Framework Proposal: Subcommittee reports Kevin Williams reported for Subcommittee 1 (History, Communications, Writing): One concerned brought by Kevin is the fact we only offer one type of Communication course. Given the focus of the department is not just oral communication, is it going to be left up to the Communications department to hire, offer and fill 28 sections of the course every semester? Discussion by committee: Could Oral Communication be rolled into a major course? And if Fundamentals of Speech was not offered how would it affect majors that do require a Oral Communications course? Could/should communication be a competency and not a specific course? If specific majors require a communications course, could this course still be offered? According to Kevin, it would still be possible to offer a handful of sections. Erik Jones reported for Subcommittee 2 (Artistic, Cultural, Societal): Committee changed Expression to Studies. The Subcommittee kept it to short but strong wording for each area and decided to leave specific course types off. Discussion from Committee: Dr. Schultz is concerned that political science and economics has been thrown out based on the descriptions presented by Subcommittee 2. The subcommittee never omitted political science or economics, and believe the inclusion of a civil engagement course would be required by all studentsa competency would need to be met. Dr. Henriksson is uncomfortable with the language presented in the Cultural Studies Description. The Subcommittee did not have anyone from a Historical background and would appreciate feedback. Andres has volunteered to review and revise Cultural Studies. Dr. Clayton reported for Subcommittee 3 (Scientific, Quantitative, and Well-being): Due to a prior conflict many of the representatives could not be present and this will be discussed more at the May 5 meeting. One mention was the change of wording from Well-being to Wellness Discussion from committee: It was asked if financial wellness a part of it? Having Financial wellness would be a good part of this course. Ann Henriksson presented for subcommittee 4 (Competencies and Capstone): Subcommittee followed many of the recommendations set by the AAC+U. Capstone course should address all the competencies. Report read by Ann and to be uploaded to SAKAI. Discussion from committee: no discuss.
