Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2010-2011): The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm Approval of minutes for meeting from 5/5/2010 Minutes approved. No corrections needed. Chairs Report Dr. Daily welcomed new members to the General Studies Committee. Dr. Darboe replacing Dr. DeWitt for SOCI Dr. Burke replacing Dr. Hannah for EDUC Dr. Barnett replacing Dr. DeVito for HPERS New Roster was handed out, refer to new list for General Studies members. Timeline Do we continue to meet two (2) Wednesdays a month? Or do we go back to following the constitution and meet only on the third Wednesdays a month? Dr. Schultz: Motion to follow Constitution, motion withdrawn. Because next meeting is scheduled for September 1 and we should wait to decide if we need to meet one or two Wednesday a month after the committee votes on the proposed framework. A general studies timeline was handed out. Vote of endorsement will take place on campus the week of Dec. 6. A & C, Senate, C & I, Academic Reform, etc will provide a vote of endorsement prior to the faculty. C & I Chairs Report Senate is considering the curricular issues that C&I endorsed at the end of last year (e.g., the move to 120 hours, etc.) Art Proposal Kristin Kaineg presents Dept. of Contemporary Art + Theater proposal to change ART 103 from 2 credits to 3 credits. The proposed change would increase the overall number of credit hours for General Studies and would require a vote from the entire faculty and approval from 2/3 of the faculty. The proposal presented AS-IS has been denied. Kristin Kaineg needs to report back to CAT and bring in a modified proposal for the committee to review. This will be considered the first reading of the ART proposal. Framework Document and Discussion Dr. Schultz withdraws Motion to approve original framework (from Jan. 20, 2010 meeting) The vote to approve framework has been postponed from Jan. 20 to Aug. 18. Dr. Slocum-Schaffer motions to discuss new proposed Framework (created at retreat 8/11/10) Dr. Henriksson Seconds Dr. Shurbutt added (page 9) students must complete some type of global awareness learning experience, satisfied either through an Area 2 cultural studies course with a global component or through a travel study experience students must complete a minimum of 4 hours of service in the community, wither through a course with a service learning component or through a project, activity, or organization that is involved in the community service. These additions have not been discussed by the committee and should be addressed as we get near the September 1 vote. Dr. Williams suggests a revision throughout the framework from communications to communication. Dr. Jones explains the complied document. At this stage, he felt it was important to bring together all the documents we have been working on into one cohesive proposal. Section I is the ISO Section II is the framework at-a-glance Section III integrates the work from all the sub-committees Section IV provides a course mapping using the current general studies Dr. Clayton proposes some changes: To include the listing of physical, life, environmental and earth & space to page 6 under Area 5: Scientific Literacy. Add MATH 101a/b to the course mapping on page 10 Was curious as to why foreign language is now included as and option listed under cultural studies Dr. Jones responds that it was discussed in earlier meetings and it was left off originally and added it back to the Framework. Dr. Darboe mentioned that the definition of Cultural Studies is not the Scientific Definition. He was not on the committee last year, but wondered how/why such a definition was approved if it was not correct. It was explained we wanted the definition to be broad and there was definitely a discussion around how-to best word Cultural Studies and Societal Studies. Cultural Studies is not just a social science concept but also a Humanities concept and both areas should be represented in the definition. It was asked, what do we mean by local civic knowledge we need to clarify our definition of it and how it will be met. Section II needs to have competencies mapped to each tier and area. Page 7-8. (e.g. art, music, theater, dance) and (e.g. political science, economics, psychology and sociology) Why are specific lists made in these two definitions but not anywhere else? We should remove the specific area in the definition since we are looking to move away from course specific and encourage students to meet a competencyif approved by committee multiple programs at SU may fulfill the area. (who made this motion?) Motion to delete (e.g. art, music, theater, dance) and (e.g. political science, economics, psychology and sociology) on page 7-8. Motion Second. Motion passes 11 to 6 Dr. Schultz makes a motion to move to Artistic Studies to the first tier and limit the number of hours to 3 credit hours. This would eliminate Artistic studies in the second tier. Increase the number of credit hours in Cultural and Societal studies to 6-9 credit hours. Dr. Schultz discusses and supports his motion. Discussion continues with various members. Dr. Jones recommends keeping Artistic studies in the second tier because it is not fundamental in comparison to science, math, english, etc. But perhaps we limit it to 3-6 hours while keeping cultural and societal at 6 to 9 credit hours. After a thorough discussion, Ms. Kaineg amends the motion to keep Artistic Studies in the second tier but cap the number of hours to 3 credit hours. Cultural Studies and Societal studies will remain 3-9 credit hours. Motion to amend Dr. Schultzs motion passes Motion to postpone vote on Framework till next meeting on Sept. 1, 2010.
