Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2010-2011): The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm. Approval of the minutes of 09/01/10 and 09/08/10 Dr. Clayton moves to approve the minutes from Sept. 1, 2010 motion second. Motion passes. Minutes approved from Sept. 1, 2010 meeting Dr. Clayton moves to approve the minutes from Sept. 8, 2010 motion second Motion passes. Minutes approved from the Sept. 8, 2010 meeting. Legislative activity on curricular issues (Dr. Helldobler) Dr. Helldobler presented information regarding from the SREB (contingency of 16 states) that recently put in motion changes to higher education in the document No Time to Waste. Changes include: reduction of 120 hours, seamless transfer, & performance funding. Dr. Helldobler also discussed the re-write of Series 11. Bruce Flack appointed Dr. Helldobler to the task force to administer the changes to Series 11. Because ϳԹis already going through changes to reduce the number of hours to 120 and address articulation for transfer students, what ϳԹpasses could become model or at the very least ϳԹwill be protected from the changes at the state level. Committee addresses concerns regarding seamless transfer and how it will impact education at Shepherd. The timeline for these changes was also addressed. Is the primary purpose of theses changes to produce as many degrees in as short of time as possible? Series 11 and SREB is not focused on credit hours (quantity does not ensure quality) rather it is assessing student learning outcomes. The model presented by SREB is not a perfect model but the message is consistent with trends in higher education to do more with less. Other questions by committee members: Was it mandated to reduce the number of credit hours in the Core Curriculum to 42 hours? And would it be a problem if the Core was higher than 42? The goal of the committee is to create a Core Curriculum that is flexible. One that integrates the major courses with the core and helps students complete their degree within given period of time. The only way we can meet the requirement is by reducing the number of credits in general studies. As we know, the current General Studies is a roadblock to student retention and time to degree. Proposal from Karen Green Karen Green proposes to amend the framework as follows: Students must take a minimum of three (3) courses from the core curriculum in each of the schools housing liberal arts disciplines the School of Arts & Humanities, Business & Social Sciences, and School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Second by Dr. Schultz Discussion: Dr. Jones wanted clarification on numbers of credits versus courses? Some courses are 4 credits and some are 2 credits by stating that 3 courses be completed the number of credits do not need to be considered. Dr. Plautz was concerned about the advisement aspect, would it be more of a nightmare to monitor this for each student? The balanced education outweighs issues with advisement. With a clear checklist it will be clear for both students and faculty. Where would this appear in the framework? This statement will appear on page 5, bullet number 4. Motion Carries to add the above statement to page 5 in the current Framework. Other Framework Discussion On page 12, change the forward slash to an ampersand. So it reads, ENGL 100A & 100B, MATH 101A & MATH 101B Definition of Experiential Learning present by Holly Frye Dr. Snyder moves to approve definition number #2 Incorporating real life experiences to enhance learning, specifically the development of critical thinking and reflective judgment skills, and to teach students to be advocates and change agents. Second by Dr. Clayton Discussion: Dont want to separate real life and classroom. Simulation occurs in many of the classroom and students may not need to go outside for experience. The experiential learning definition is changed to : Incorporating active, participatory experiences to enhance learning, specifically the development of critical thinking and reflective judgment skills, and to teach students to be advocates and change agents. Committee approves the definition of Experiential Learning as listed above. Next meeting to occur on Wednesday Oct. 6 at 4:10pm We need a room for the meeting since Cumberland Room is filled during the meeting Time. Dr. Clayton to look at rooms in EOB for Oct. 6 meeting. Concerns/Comments from Dr. Dawn Burke Dr. Burke provided the committee with the definition and information on CivilityGlobal Civility. The committee needs to be proactive with the change, not reactive. We want to make the changes ϳԹwants to see not what the state mandates. Dr. Burke wants to see the committee make a creative sustainable change to the Core Curriculum. While we are making the changes to the Core, we should also look at how Internationalization will impact education at Shepherd. What if we look to beginning a TESOL and TOEFL courses at Shepherd? Departments could create courses within the TESOL unit to help students acclimated to US culture. See handouts for additional information presented by Dr. Burke. C&I Report (Dr. Shurbutt) C&I is up to date with the GSC proposed Framework. Communication will continue between both committees as we move closer to the faculty vote. Other Proposals No other proposals were presented.
