Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2010-2011): The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm. Approval of the minutes from 10/6/2010 Dr. Jones moves to approve the minutes from Oct. 6, 2010 motion second. Motion passes. Minutes approved from Oct. 6, 2010 meeting Foreign Language Proposal (Dr. Tim Nixon) Dr. Nixon motions to propose that all undergraduate students at ϳԹUniversity, regardless of their major or degree, be required to pass four semesters (i.e., 12 hours) of study in one foreign language* or demonstrate proficiency, equivalent to four semesters of study, in a language other than English * Because of the unique demands placed upon vocal performers, students majoring in Music will be allowed to complete four semesters of study in multiple foreign languages, rather than four semesters in a single language. Motion second by Dr. Slocum-Schaffer Discussion: Below are some highlights of the hour + long discussion. Would the 12 credits (or four semesters) be on top of the already proposed 42 credits in the Core Curriculum? As it stands now, these four semesters would be in addition to the already proposed framework. Many representatives are in favor of the proposal and believe it is important to the contemporary world. But other representatives are concerned on how some programs can retain accreditation and stay within the 120 credits to graduate. Because foreign language is already required for many high school students many students will already come to ϳԹbeing able to pass a competency test that will fulfill one or two semesters worth of language. Having students learn another language is helpful to help student improve their sentence structure and writing in their native language. Would sign language be considered as a language equivalent does it have to be a spoken language? At one point in the discussion, dr. Schultz presents the idea and possibility of having two Core Curriculum tracks. One for students in specific majors with Accreditation or professional studies concerns and one for the rest of the students. Dr. Jones motions to postpone the vote on the Foreign Language Proposal till the Nov. 3 meeting. Motion Second. Motion Passes. A vote on the Foreign Language Proposal will take place Nov. 3. COMM Proposal (Dr. Kevin Williams) Dr. Williams and the department of communication proposes that we move communication into Tier 2 and raise the required hours for humanities in tier accordingly. By moving Communication under the Humanities area of study, it will decrease the credits in Tier 1 from 24 to 21 and increase Tier 2 from 18 to 21 credits. The Communication course would Second by Dr. Shurbutt Discussion. Dr. Williams made the following points, In an effort to: bring the communication major, minors, and general studies into alignment, allow for the development of new Speech courses, maintain section of Fund. of Speech (with new ISOs) for programs such as Education, include more full-time faculty in general studies, reduce the reliance on adjunct faculty, diversify course options for students, modernize the GS and university image of communication, and to draw upon knowledge about communication through the journals and publications of the National Communication Association (formally Speech Communication Association), the International Communication Association, and the major publishers in the contemporary field, Motion Passes. Distribution of hours (Dr. Erik Jones) Not going to bring the issue forward since the previous motion for Communication was approved. A new motion by Dr. Jones after Dr. Schultz presented the idea of two tracks. A motion to form a Subcommittee to look at the possibility of creating two Core Curriculum tracks. One track will accommodate a richer Core Curriculum and another limited to 42 hours for professional programs and majors with accreditation concerns. The Subcommittee will present at the Nov. 3 meeting. The Subcommittee would consist of a representative from every school, and a Student Representative. Second by Dr. Schultz The subcommittee to consist of: Dr. Jones (A + H), Dr. Schultz (B + SS), Dr. Clayton (E + PS), and Dr. Plautz (NS +M) and student rep Timothy Leonard GS Change Form (Kristin Kaineg) Edits to the forms: Replace signature of C+I chair to Chair of General Studies Delete will there be a common syllabus for all sections of this course? Add, Is this course required for any program? If so, which one(s). C+I Report (Dr. Shurbutt) Passed around form and discussed it with the members of C+I. There was the concern with the common syllabus question. Other Business No other business was discussed.
