Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice
Ph.D., University Of South Carolina, 2024
Dr. Laskovtsov joined the Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Criminal Justice in the Fall of 2024. She teaches the department’s social stratification (SOCI 321), as well introductory sociology (SOCI 203) and criminal justice (CRIM 200) courses. She also teaches special topics classes like Gender and Crime (CRIM 415), Victimology (CRIM 399), and Rural Criminology (CRIM 399). Dr. Laskovtsov has also taken on the role of faculty advisor to the student-led Sociology and Criminology Club (SCCJ) on campus.
As a criminologist, Dr. Laskovtsov’s teaching and research interests are enmeshed in sociological and criminological understanding and labeling of victims (and “victimhood”) and their experiences with the criminal justice system. Broadly, she examines issues of gender, technology, and victimization. Her past published work focuses on digital forms of abuse, namely on the experiences of involuntarily celibate (incels) men and their beliefs surrounding violence against women. This sociological examination of a group of people led to other areas of interest such as digital spaces and the transferability of harm to these contexts.
Currently, Dr. Laskovtsov is working on publishing various articles out of her dissertation, which was focused on image-based sexual abuse, or revenge pornography. She is also pursuing other research related to abuse of power, gender and crime, and crime victims’ sense of resilience and empowerment in the aftermath of trauma.
She recently adopted a senior beagle named “Lulu”. Lulu is the unofficial mascot of the Sociology and Criminology Club (SCCJ)! If you see her around campus, please say hi!
