ϳԹUniversity’s David Modler Named 2025 WVAEA Higher Education Art Educator of the Year

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WVThe West Virginia Art Education Association (WVAEA) has named David Modler, professor of art at ϳԹUniversity, as the 2025 Higher Education Art Educator of the Year. The award honors Ѵǻ’s dedication to his students, his commitment to the discipline of art education, and his leadership within the ٲٱ’s visual arts community.

“PǴڱǰ Ѵǻ’s dedication to teaching, mentorship, and artistic leadership uplifts our students and enhances Shepherd’s presence in the arts,” said Dr. Kurtis Adams, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. “This honor reflects the significant impact he continues to make on our campus and beyond.”

In addition to his faculty role, Modler serves as the coordinator of art education at Shepherd.He holds a B.S. and M.Ed. in art education from Towson State University and an M.F.A. in painting and drawing from James Madison University.His artistic work centers on visual journals, mixed-media, and installations, and he is widely recognized for workshops, national exhibitions, and contributions to the field.

Modler will be recognized at the WVAEA Awards Ceremony during the Fall Conference at ϳԹUniversity on Saturday, October 18.

The WVAEA is committed to advancing art education statewide through professional development, advocacy, and community engagement. Each year, WVAEA highlights the contributions of outstanding educators who inspire students and foster excellence in visual arts education.
